Aix-en-Provence is a compact, walkable city — but depending on where you stay, your experience will be completely different. Here’s an overview of the main neighbourhoods to help you choose the right one.

Le Vieil-Aix: the historic heart
This is where the city truly comes alive. 17th-century mansions, stone fountains, the Cours Mirabeau, the morning market… Staying in Vieil-Aix means living the city from the inside — on foot, without a car.
It’s also the most sought-after area, with very few quality rentals available. If you find a well-located apartment, don’t wait.
The Mazarin quarter: elegance and calm
Just south of the Cours Mirabeau, Mazarin is the other aristocratic face of Aix. Wider streets, fewer tourists, and some remarkable museums. Perfect for those who want peace and quiet without sacrificing proximity to everything.
The train station and shopping area
Convenient for getting around, but less charming. If you’re arriving by TGV and planning day trips in the region, it can work. But if you want to truly experience Aix, this isn’t the place.
