Discover the most beautiful fountains of Aix-en-Provence on a 20-minute walk: La Rotonde, the Mossy Fountain, Place d’Albertas, and the Four Dolphins.
Aix-en-Provence is often called the “city of a thousand fountains.” Since the 17th century, water has run through the heart of the city, offering locals and visitors alike cool, shaded pockets right in the historic centre. Here’s our favourite route, just 20 minutes on foot.
1. La Rotonde
The obvious starting point: this monumental fountain stands at the entrance to Cours Mirabeau. You can’t miss it arriving in the city centre — every visit to Aix begins here.
2. The Mossy Fountain (Fontaine Moussue)
Walking up Cours Mirabeau, you’ll find this moss-covered fountain, fed by a natural hot spring. Its quirk: the water that flows from it is warm, almost steaming in winter — a direct trace of the city’s thermal past.
3. Place d’Albertas
Just steps away, this 18th-century cobbled square is one of the most photographed spots in Aix. Its central fountain, framed by elegant stone façades, is the perfect place to pause in the shade.
4. The Four Dolphins Fountain (Fontaine des Quatre Dauphins)
Head into the Mazarin district to finish the walk at this quieter but equally charming fountain, tucked at the crossing of four peaceful streets.
A free walk, any time of day
This route needs no booking, no ticket, and works at any hour — a great way to escape the July heat while taking in some of Aix’s heritage.
And after the walk?
After this refreshing break, nothing beats heading back to an air-conditioned apartment right in the centre to keep cool. Our apartments are just a few minutes’ walk from this route, in the heart of historic Aix-en-Provence.
